Old Fashion Recipes for Your Holiday Table: Sweet Potato Apple Scallop and Indiana Apple Yams

Thanksgiving and Christmas meals just aren't complete without a Sweet Potato or Yam dish.  If you are tired of the same old recipe every year, go back in time and try these old fashion recipes from Southern Indiana when I was a kid.  Yes, that was a long time ago but they are just as good today!

SWEET POTATO APPLE SCALLOP

2 lbs sweet potatoes (3 medium)
2 med apples, peeled and cored
1 tbsp lemon juice
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup chopped pecans
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice
1/2 tsp orange extract
2 tbsp butter

Place sweet potatoes in a saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil; cook 20-25minutes or until tender. Drain and cool. Peel potatoes and cut into 1/4-inch slices. Place in a 13 x 9-inch baking dish or pan that has been greased. Cut apples into 1/4-inch rings; cut in half. Arrange over sweet potatoes. Sprinkle apple slices with lemon juice. Combine the brown sugar, pecans, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, and orange extract. Sprinkle mixture over apples. Dot with butter. Bake, uncovered, at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes or until apples are tender.

INDIANA APPLE YAMS

8 to 10 large baking apples
1 can (20-oz) sweet potatoes
1/4 cup dark Karo syrup
1/4 cup butter, melted
1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp cinnamon
16 miniature marshmallows
1 tbsp lemon juice
1/4 cup butter

Heat the oven to 350 degrees.

Hollow out the apples until only a 1/2-inch thick wall remains. Combine the Karo syrup, melted butter, salt, cinnamon, marshmallows, and lemon juice. Drain the sweet potatoes, mash and combine with the syrup mixture. Stir to combine mixture well. Generously stuff the apples with the sweet potato mixture to overflowing. Place the apples in a cake pan or casserole dish and dot with the remaining 1/4 cup butter. Place in the oven and bake at 350 degrees for 1/2 hour.

Can you help me identify a favorite cookie from the 1960s?

I am looking for the name of cocoa-colored cookies that have chocolate frosting in the center, sort of like the opposite of Oreos. This cookie was distinguished by a scalloped edge, and they were DELICIOUS!! Anybody got any information? I've checked "the usual suspects" sites like Nabisco and Keebler. I'm not sure if this cookie is even made anymore. I enjoyed it as a kid in the 60s. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

What Valuable Lesson About Manifesting Abundance Can We Learn From Watching "MTV Cribs"?

If you watch a show like MTV Cribs, you know that they feature the houses, or "cribs" if you will, of different celebrities, from musicians, to actors and actresses, players on different professional sports teams from basketball to football to hockey, music executives, the list goes on.

Most of the houses that are featured are around 10,000 square feet. The driveways are filled with all these luxury cars, there's a pool in the back, some places have a bowling alley, or a basketball court, and some even have a home movie theater, plush seats included.

Now, on the surface, it is evident that these celebrities are able to live this way because they have a lot of money, which in a way, is true, because you won't be able to afford this stuff if you were working a minimum wage job.

Yet, there's deeper lesson to be learned here.

Everything that they showed on this television that was owned by the celebrity was in actuality based on his talent/gift/ability. It was the talent that laid within the celebrity that was the foundation with which he was able to attract the money he had to obtain what was being shown on MTV Cribs.

It's the same way when we look at city-states like Dubai, or countries like Saudi Arabia. These are places which are known to have modern cities with a well developed infrastructure.

To be able to build all this, these countries harnessed the resources that lay within their territories, namely oil. The oil was the resource that lay within that was able to attract the money they needed to develop their countries.

Well, take heart, because you're no different.

Just like the celebrities you see on MTV Cribs with beautiful houses, just like nations like Saudi Arabia, or city-states like Dubai, you too have talents/gifts within you that can be harnessed for manifesting abundance in your own life.

There are infallible Universal laws and principles for manifesting abundance that exist (just like the Law of Gravity, or Laws of Physics) that can be used to turn your talents into wealth, not only financial wealth, but wealth in a way that enriches the lives of others (and subsequently yourself) by providing value.

By learning the Universal laws and principles for manifesting abundance, you too can use your talents and gifts to create your own reality. It just takes a little effort to learn them, and a willingness to apply them, and you too can manifest your own "kingdom."

What do you think of this nursery bedding?

What do you think of this bedding for my baby boys nursery? I think it's pretty cute, and I haven't seen anything else I really like as of yet for the same price! Toddler Race Car Bed

Bedtime can be difficult for Toddlers.  Many parents dread that time of night when they try and get their child to go to bed.  Why not give your child an incentive to make this process easier.  What child doesn't like race cars?  What child wouldn't like a bed in the shape of a race car?  Believe it or not, there are many companies and models of toddler race car beds.  Let's find the one that is right for you.

Is your child a fan of the movie "Cars"?  If so, there is a Lightning McQueen Sports Car twin bed available for around $370.00.  This bed looks realistic and is recommended for ages 2-5. When your child is watching the movie on television, he or she can be laying in their very on McQueen Sports Car.  There are plenty of places online that offer this bed. Comparison shopping is a very good idea, because prices can vary.  

Perhaps your child wants to be a fireman.  If so, there are fire truck beds available.  
Some of these beds can be a bit pricey.  So as always, do some online comparison shopping and make sure you are getting a deal.  

The Disney beds are available through various Disney outlets. If you can imagine a Disney character, there is probably a bed for it. As we mentioned before, there are the beds from the movie Cars. However, they don't limit these things to just race car beds.  

If you are on a budget, and don't want to spend all that money on one of the name brands, head to a discount chain or one of their websites. They will be happy to hook you up. We found a toddler race car bed for as little as $35.00.  In the end, your child isn't going to care how much the bed cost. They will just love the fact that it is shaped like a car. After all, how long will they be interested in it?

As with any object you give your child, make sure that it is safe. Check out the bed for any sharp points, or places that could cut the child.  Make sure the material is durable and suited for the rough and tumble world of a toddler.

In the end, your child will love bedtime. It will be an event that he or she will look forward to at the end of a great day.

Accent pillows can really cost quite a bit, but nice less expensive ones can be found. Of course, a trip to a fabric store, pillow forms, and a sewing machine is the cheapest route.

Christmas In Germany, An Experience You Will Never Forget

The Christmas holiday begins December 24th and ends on the 26th. On the 24th (Christmas Eve), most Germans work a half day and shops are open until the early afternoon. Gifts are usually opened on the evening of the 24th. Christmas day is a little different. Unlike the U.S., Germany celebrates two Christmas days, the 25th and the 26th.

Christmas weather in Germany is usually around 28-40 degrees fahrenheit. Snow is not very common during this time. You may get lucky if you are visiting a town which is located at a higher elevation. On average Germany probably gets snow one out of five years in lower areas.

Christmas in Germany may be one of the most unique experiences you ever have. With the famous Christmas markets in almost every town you come across, you are sure to have a time of your life. Whether you visit Germany during the Holidays Season for business or pleasure, you will have a lot to talk about when you return home. The way Germans celebrate this holiday is not much different than the way Americans do. The tradition of the Christmas tree with the presents underneath is of course the main tradition. You will find lights all over the place as you will in the U.S. Stockings are traditional as well as they are hung and filled with goodies for the kids. Santa Claus (Weihnachtsmann) is no different. The big, bearded man dressed in red who rides in a slay pulled by raindeer. Children are always excited to see what Santa left them under the tree. Lets talk about some of the things you will experience during the Christmas holiday in Germany.

Christmas Fests (Weihnachtsfest) – Possibly the number one attraction during Christmas time in Germany. These exciting functions usually start toward the end of November and end on the 22nd or 23rd of December in bigger cities like Frankfurt, Berlin and Munich. In smaller cities they are normally held on one weekend in December. Each town holds their own fest so it is not uncommon for the fests to be held on different weekends. Traditionally the Mayor of the town opens the Christmas fest by lighting an enormous tree.

Christmas fests are a place you can go with your family to enjoy the Christmas season and take in every wonderful thing this season brings. Fests are usually held at the city center in a public, open area. You just walk up to the area and enjoy. You may not want to drive to the fests. Germany has very limited parking spots during normal months and it is almost impossible to get a parking spot anywhere close to a Christmas market. There is one option if you wish to drive, you can park in a garage and pay approximatly two euro an hour but I will warn you, the Gluehwein tends to sneak up on you. There are several things to experience during these fests. Below are just a few of the more traditional ones.

Gluehwein (Glow Wine) This is a very popular alcoholic drink during the Christmas holiday in Germany. Gluehwein is a warm red wine that is served out of small shacks at these fests. Gluewein is normally only served during the Christmas season but you can purchase it year-round at a German liquor store.

Gingerbread (Lebkuchen) The traditional gingerbread that you will see is covered in chocolate. You will see several shapes and sizes, decorated or not as you wonder through the fest. The city of Nuremberg provides the most famous gingerbread that can be found all over Germany during the holiday season.

Nutcracker Soldiers and Drummers, These famous figurines can be found throughout any fest you visit as well. They range from miniature sizes to extremely large and there are several different styles to choose from.

Chestnuts (Maronen) Just like the famous song, chestnuts are ,roasted on an open fire, and served to you very warm. You will notice many people munching on these goodies throughout the fests as well.

Christmas Food, Some of the tradional Christmas dishes are:

Christmas Goose (Weihnachtsgans) This dish traditionally consists of a stuffed goose, potatoe dumplings, red cabage and a wine flavored sauce. There is no special technique in fixing this dish but the sauce consists of wine, the juices produced while cooking the goose and a gravy. You can find this at many German restaurants during the Christmas season and many German family make it as well.

Weihnachtsstollen, There is no English translation that we know of but this German bread consists of raisins, almond paste, candied orange peel and many other ingredients. The bread is topped with powdered sugar. You can find this bread in any supermarket in Germany during the Christmas season.

Candy Apples (Bratapfel) These flavorfull caramel covered apples are very popular during the Christmas season in Germany as well as America and many other Countries. You can find these treats mainly at the Christmas fests.

Christmas Cookies (Weihnachtsgebaeck) Christmas cookies are made in many different variations and flavors throughout Germany. You are sure to find some that suite your taste buds. There is no single traditional Christmas cookie made in particular but you will find Christmas cookies throughout Germany during Christmas.

It's not necessarily made in Germany, though, because today there are many car facturers. Some German cars would be Mercedes Benz, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche ...

If I were you I'd have a look at the brand names of the stuff in your house, especially the electrical appliances ... there may be some of Bosch, perhaps. You could google them to find out whether they are German.
