My Heartwarming Quilts
From Mayhem to Quilts
I'm taking a rare break from my hectic life to have a cup of coffee and consider the new direction my life's journey is taking me. Won't you take a short break as well and let me share my story?
We have a bustling household with my husband, two sons (21 and 22), and legal guardianship of three grandchildren (4, 8, and 12). We have also been foster parents to more than twenty foster children in the last four years of varied ages for some time periods of two weeks to three years. Outside of the home, I have been in the work force for more than 32 years and a State of Kansas employee since 1974 - which makes my life very busy juggling both a large family and career.
It is no wonder that my journey in life needs to change now to accommodate my family's needs. If I retire from government work, my grandchildren and foster children will have someone that can devote herself more to family and school activities. Something my own children had to only get in quick snatches of time between, my job and running a home . . . now we will be able to enjoy and enrich each other's lives more fully. I'll be there for them when they need someone to talk to, help with homework, someone to cheer them on, or simply share the day.
Retirement will also offer a new adventure for me. Since our family grew so quickly and unexpectedly, we had to purchase a six-bedroom home to accommodate everyone. The extra housing expense means that we will need an extra income during retirement to help with our family's finances. However, this has led us in a new direction that is exciting and fulfilling. I've decided to open an online store for quilts!
You might ask how is quilting so fulfilling? I have personally seen the love and emotional impact quilts can have on little ones that have been tossed about by life and hurt emotionally. My six grandchildren have had several design quilts made out of fabrics they have personally chosen and patterns that they liked. All twenty of my foster children has had a design quilt given to them as well-even if their stay was as short as a month. Yes, these quilts are beautiful and colorful . . . they are warm or lightweight depending on their needs and season . . . but this is not what make them so special.
What makes a design quilt so special? It is the love imparted and the emotional impact it can have on not only a small child, but an adult as well. Foster children are pulled from everything and everyone they know . . . their whole little world is totally shattered in a matter of minutes when pulled from their homes. Often they are placed in several foster homes before a permanent placement can be arranged legally. These little ones have nothing and no one, except sometimes a sibling and even then, they are often separated into different foster homes. A design quilt wraps them in love; they feel secure - like being hugged and it goes with them no matter where they are finally placed. A quilt is something that belongs to them and is not jerked away from them, they can curl up in it and remember the giver's love and feel safe from all the craziness of their little lives.
A newborn infant will cry out and scream as if in pain, but when swaddled tight and secure in a blanket will feel safe and loved. An elderly adult can have a design quilt with them to not only keep them warm, but help them remember they have loved ones in the world that care. A quilt wraps you in love and some how seems to help with all the troubles that may be in your life at the moment.
That's why I'm excited about this aspect of my life's journey. Giving to others the wonderful gift of love and security, while being able to share and impart more love and caring on my own extended family. My life might be a quieter life, but some how so much more fulfilling. Thank-you for spending time with me today and maybe you can give a design quilt to a cherished loved one of your own.

what kind of baby blankets are you supposed to use?
I just received the bedding set with a quilt was used before as a wall hanging. I guess I'm not supposed to use the quilt for fear of suffocation. Thats fine but what kind of blanket am I supposed to use? I would like something warm and kind of thick not the little security blankets. Any suggestions on a brand that is soft and thick that won't suffocate? Thanks, I'm going to be a first time Mom and just want to do it right.
19 weeks and 4 days with #1You're actually suppose to put your baby in a bed with no blankets, pillows, or stuffed animals. Your suppose to put him/her flat on their back, and dress them in something warm like a thick sleeper.

Thinking of Raising Baby Ducks? What You Need to Know
Raising baby ducks is a fun task, usually a little delicate the younger the ducklings are but the difficulty of taking care of them gradually lifts when they grow older.
After artificial incubating of 28 days, the ducklings now need a brooding spot. The brooding spot is a place with good conditions so that the baby ducks will live. It can be a corner of the barn or in the garage, as long as the area is well ventilated-not directly exposed to wind, and well lighted. The usual brooding nest is a cardboard box that is enough to house all the baby ducklings. It must be enclosed in a cage to prevent entry for predators, even dogs and cats.
The brooding spot is then kept dry by the beddings which is usually made up of hay. Wet spots on the beddings should be replaced. Do not use moldy or dusty beddings because they might affect the young ducks negatively.
The temperature of the brooding area should also be kept warm-warm not hot. This can be done with a single 50-watt reflector bulb for about 10 to 20 ducklings. A 50 to 100 incandescent bulb can also be used in heating. The important thing is to position the bulb at the right distance in the brooding area so that the ducklings can move towards it if they feel cold or away from it when they feel hot. In raising baby ducks for commercial purposes, more bulbs or with higher wattages are used.
Another important element in raising baby ducks is the food. They cannot digest whole grains yet so don't feed them with rice or corn. Don't give them bird seed and dry bread too. They may be fed with finely chopped fruits and vegetables. You may catch small worms for them too. Unmedicated chick or duck starter can be fed to them too. A special water dispenser should also be used so that a water height is maintained; so that the ducklings can drink without drowning if they jumped onto it.
Note that raising baby ducks can also be done in a contained environment, like an incubating system where the temperature, humidity and air can be easily adjusted, especially when they are 2-3 weeks old only.
About the Author
This setting is for a huge number or by-batch raising. This is the preferable method in raising baby ducks for commercial purpose. But if you have a few newly hatched ducklings in your farm, or if you received a few young as a gift, nothing can be as rewarding as watching and helping them grow with your own hands. What milestones has your baby recently achieved?
I know we all love to brag so I thought I would ask, what has your baby achieved in the last week or so?
My guy will be 8 months old on Wednesday and in the last week or so he has
learned how to wave hi and bye
has begun the dabodobee consonant sounds instead of the multi pitched ahs
restarted with the happy screeches after spending the day with his 1yr old cousin who does them constantly
has learned to land butt first instead of head first when he topples over while standing.
learned how to turn the musical turtle toy on
plays peek a boo by ducking behind the top edge of his playard and then popping his head back up.
has fallen in love with the remote controlnow for everyone in the Eastern time zone - GO TO BED it's 11pm, your baby will be awake in a few short hours - sleep. YA will be here tomorrow!! LOL
My son will be 7 weeks old this week. He has recently started to smile a lot, making "cooing" noises, and sleeping about 6 hours a night. I'm so proud of him. I know he's still really little, and his "milestones" are really little also, but I'm a proud mommy and I love to brag.
