Tips on Baby Crib Safety

If you're a mom or dad, no doubt you'll do anything to protect your baby. One of the places your baby spends a lot of time is in her baby crib.

You may feel at ease that your little one is safe in her crib, but think again. There is some information you should know about baby crib safety to be sure your little one is safe.

If the crib is older, get it modified to updated crib safety standards, or get a new one.

Having your baby use the same crib you used, or possible even your parents used is very sentimental. Family treasures are wonderful, however, not the best choice when it comes to baby crib safety. These older cribs might have dangers in them that have been corrected in the newer models.

For instance, it would not be uncommon for an old wood crib to be painted with lead based paint, splintering because of it's age, or the space between the slats is to wide. This should sound the danger signal.

So if you have an old crib that was given to you by a well-meaning neighbor, friend, family member, or if you picked it up from a thrift store or a garage sale, make sure you have it checked out for safety. If you can't have this done, then toss it and get a new one that's up to current crib safety standards. Always better to be safe than sorry.

Avoid plush, soft bedding.

When bed time comes, using a firm mattress, place your baby on her back. Don't use blankets to cover her, or pillows to cushion her, however the room should be kept warm enough so that blankets will not be necessary.

Mobiles need to be out of baby's reach.

Using mobiles are great for learning, as long as your baby is not yet capable of sitting up, reaching, or grabbing. When your child is able to do these things, make certain the mobile is out of reach so she doesn't grab it and yank it down on herself.

Doing so could mean your child risks choking on small parts or strangling on strings or cords. Once your child is active enough to be able to reach and "play with" the mobile, it should be removed.

These few baby crib safety tips could be the difference between a peaceful rest or a ride in the ambulance.

because of Sid's when can you give baby blanket in crib?

i live in maine will be cold weather soon old house when can i give my daghter a blanket in her crib she is only 6 mos now but im hoping i can to drafty house

Don't bother with blankets for two reasons. First, at six months old, she is still at risk for SIDS, and you will probably not sleep as well at night if you put a blanket in at this point. Second, babies rarely keep blankets on at all. You will find the blanket bunched up at one end of the bed, or worse, bunched up at her head.

A MUCH better thing to use is the Halo Sleep Sack. They cost about $30-$40 for two, which is all you need (one to wear if she spits up or wets the other). I use sleep sacks on my daughter (8 months old) every night. I just put it over her sleeper, and she his SO comfortable! Best of all, there is NO way she can kick it off, and if she rolls over on her tummy, it rolls with her.

I agree, a drafty house, which I also have, can be uncomfortable, especially in the wee hours of the morning. The sleep sack is great! By the way, don't waste your money on the Wal-Mart type sleep sacks. They shrink and become too thin to do much good.

how to keep baby warm at night- if the toddler kick away quilt and refuses the sleepbag? oh -...?

...he refuses toothbrushing
I have to get up at night several times to cover him but in the morning he is always found have nothing on him. Before he goes to bed, he refuses to toothbrushing!!!

My 2-year-old daughter Bridget likes to kick her covers off, too. We are dealing with the problem by choosing her jammies based on how cool the room is getting. If it's going to be cool, we dress her in long, 1-piece jammies with footies in them. If it's hot, she gets short sleeves and pants. Inbetween, it's long bottoms and sometimes long-sleeved tops as well.

She also has a menagerie of large plushies in her crib. Her favorites are a big, white bunny and a large Elmo doll that she also likes to carry around with her in the day. We always find her snuggled up with one or both of them, and they help to keep her warm. Finally, she knows what the blankies are for, since she plays with her "Big Elmo" by covering him up when she wants him to "nap." We figure she can cover herself up as well.

But we also keep an eye on the temp in the nursery. We use a remote thermometer for this, as well as still using the baby monitor to check up on her once in a while.

As to the tooth brushing - lots of times, we wind up brushing her teeth ourselves. We have a rubber wadget with bristles that fits over a fingertip. But she is getting better at brushing herself because we brush our teeth with her and make a game of it.

Second time: What effects if any did your baby receive after 4 month vaccinations?

I posted this question a little earlier and received some good replies. However, I was not completely clear. My child used to talk (baby talk) anytime she could proir to vaccine. Afterwards (approx 3 weeks ago) she has been very quiet and sleeps more than usual. Any comments or answers will be greatly appreciated.

im so sorry to hear that your baby had a reaction to the shots.. my son did too (after his 4 month ones) and his 6 month ones are coming up very soon... let me tell you first what happened to him, and see if it relates to your little girl...

he went in for his shots, came home, was fine - playing, rolling around, laughing, talking, etc. Then he got sleepy so I laid him down for his nap. An hour later he woke up SCREAMING- and continued with a cry i never heard before.at first, i assumed it was because he was in pain from the shots, so gave him tylenol for the pain, and began preparing his bottle.. and all of a sudden he completely stopped and just froze.

for the next half hour it was like he was a vegetable. hes a boy who NEVER stops moving and squirming and making faces and trying to explore everything.. and he wouldnt respond to a thing. and then after a tiny bit, hed get that whimpery cry, and then itd happen again. i would pick up his arm, and it would just flop back down. i tried getting him to laugh and smile or do SOMETHING, and he just stared - this glossy eyed blank stare. i would walk away and hed be staring at where i was standing, and i'd call his name and after like a minute he slowly was able to turn his head towards me.

his temp then dropped to 94.7, he had goosebumps everywhere (and i had him swaddled in a fleece blanket) ... i took him to the ER per doctors orders. (even putting him in his car seat was weird - he ALWAYS resists it, or at least squirms ,and this time he couldnt even move or cry, just a very faint, soft whimper.)

anyway.... long story, sorry, but basically when we got there, it was like he snapped out of it completely. he did a 180 and was back to being dylan - smiling laughing, grabbing the nurses shirt, talking, etc...

and a week later he started crying, which lasted 2 days straight.. i took him in, convinced it was a long term reaction to the shots - and they found an ear infection. slowly he began to get better, and now hes back to himself... i thank god because its the scariest thing when that happens, and i know how you feel

she could just be going through a growth spurt right now, or teething, or maybe even feeling a little sick. however... the doctors will tell you that it definitely isn't a reaction to the shots. thats what they told me too, except they say they were going to 'modify' his next shots. (strange if he didnt have a reaction, right?) basically you have to trust your instincts. the symptoms youre describing sound like early symptoms of autism, however, she wouldnt have picked that up from a shot this young - that comes from the mercury in the ones they get i think at a year? the MMR shot.

i would advise taking her in and getting second - even third - opinions on the symptoms shes having and what caused them - especially before her next shots. i'll put some links on here for you regarding immunizations and reactions to them in case you want to check it out. you can also email me if you want danaco@ymail.com
